| Tillamook Sturgeon
In early summer, between the spring and summer Chinook runs, the Oregon coast offers a narrow
window of excellent white sturgeon fishing. Known to Northwesterners as "mud marlin," these
prehistoric beasts range in size from two to twelve feet long. They are a bottom fish, but
they commonly jump during a fight. |
 |
| Tillamook sturgeon are among the most desirable anywhere on the west coast.
Tillamook Bay is practically free of man-made toxins, unlike the nearby Columbia River system.
Since white sturgeon are long-lived fish, they can accumulate environmental toxins in their
fat and flesh. Tillamook Bay also has a high percentage of "keeper" sturgeon, from 42 to 60
inches in length. |

| Summer Salmon & Cutthroat Trout
Summer months on the Oregon coast are priceless. Imagine cool, foggy mornings, giving way to sunny,
breezy afternoons. And then there are the perfect sunsets. While most of the North American
continent swelters in summer heat, our coastal temperatures rarely top 75 degrees. Our mountains
and river valleys are blanketed in lush forests, and our bays and estuaries are swarming with
silvery Chinook salmon and voracious cutthroat trout. |
 |
| From July to October, First Water Outfitters specializes in coastal salmon
trips. Our summer home consists of mile after mile of peaceful estuary, bordered by tall evergreen
forests. We share this beautiful place with resident eagles, ospreys, herons, otters, seals,
cormorants and many other creatures. Migratory cutthroat trout travel through the estuaries,
eating everything that will fit in their mouths. And the Chinook salmon-the kings of the
river-swarm in the cool deep pools, waiting for a well presented offering.
During the 2002 season (from July through October), First Water clients boated over 250 king
salmon. Almost all of these were caught using bait, but a handful were caught on fly-tackle.
Whatever the method, what's important to us is that our clients had some of the best fishing of
their lives! |
